Water is an essential component in living a healthy life. Our bodies are composed of about 60%-65% water, yet we often enter a state of dehydration. Dehydration occurs when we expel more fluids than we are consuming. Many of our organs rely on a significant amount of water, and when we are dehydrated we are causing those organs to decrease in functionality. Some symptoms of dehydration that may occur include thirst, dry skin or wrinkles, dark yellow or brown urine, dizziness or headaches, cramps, and a decline in cognitive and physical performance. We naturally grab for water when we feel thirsty, but by the time our thirst is initiated we are already dehydrated. It is important to keep yourself hydrated before you reach that point. Staying hydrated helps regulate your body temperature, moisten tissues, lubricate joints, flush out waste, carry nutrients to cells, and protect your organs. Here are some easy tricks to keep you hydrated:

  • Carry a bottle with you at all times and continuously fill it up throughout the day.

  • Drink 10 large sips every 15-20 minutes when working out.

  • Use a water app that tracks your water consumption and reminds you to drink throughout the day.

  • Snack on fruits with a high water content (watermelon, grapes, oranges, etc.).

  • Avoid drinks with caffeine as caffeine is a diuretic and can dehydrate the body.

Happy hydrating!
